Our Programs

Hestia House opened its doors in 1981. We have provided shelter and support for more than twelve thousand women and children.

Hestia House offers a wide variety of comprehensive programs to the community. Whether a client is thinking about leaving an unhealthy relationship or would like more information about domestic violence and the help available.

Our programs are designed to meet the individual needs of each person who is seeking help.

Maritime women have had to fight hard for transition houses.  It is important to note that in Saint John, as in many areas, the establishment of a transition house was a direct response by the community to address the issue of abuse against women.

Our Programs Offer

  • Complete confidentiality
  • Assistance in planning for the future
  • Information, referral and advocacy
  • Support and counselling
  • House meetings and individual counseling

Shelter & Support

Hestia House provides shelter and support for up to 24 women and their children.  It is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with seven full-time and three part-time staff.

One of the most positive aspects of transition house life is the support that the residents give to one another.  There is a tremendous sense of solidarity and empowerment when they realize they are not alone.

Counselling

Counselling is also an important part of the transition house experience.  Staff counselling primarily helps women understand the nature of the abusive relationship and to clearly see their own situation so they can make informed decisions.  The staff is here to provide a link to available community services.  The strength and tenacity of our clients in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, is truly remarkable.  Once believed, heard and validated; women start to make decisions.

If you are currently experiencing violence and fear in your relationship please contact Hestia House to help you now.
